Private tutor with extensive training and experience in teaching students with reading difficulties.
My Background
My name is Lily Alvarez. I am a NYS-certified Special Education Teacher with 20 years of classroom experience teaching students with a variety of learning needs. Over the years, I have developed a passion for helping students who struggle with learning how to read, particularly those with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Reading is the foundation of success in both the academic and career world. All children can learn to read, but for some, the road will be more difficult. These are the students that I am passionate about helping to find their way to becoming skilled, fluent readers.
Personalized Lessons
I am a strong believer in a structured literacy approach to teaching reading as this is a necessary method of instruction for many students. I use programs that are based on the well renowned and highly effective methodologies of Orton Gillingham including the Wilson Reading System, Just Words and PAF. Intervention is provided in a one-to-one or small group setting. Tutoring sessions are available in person or remotely.
Assessments
With the new Tests of Dyslexia (TOD ®), students can be assessed to determine their risk and/or possibility of having dyslexia. A short screener can determine the level of risk, while a more comprehensive assessment can determine the probability that a person has dyslexia. Both assessments are offered in person or remotely.
